Cultivating Wholeness: Embodied Essences and the Spiritual Effects of the Clothes We Wear

Knowledge Share Description

Embodiment remains an undervalued, understudied, and mystifying topic although it is an important aspect of every society and culture. We all have bodies, and we are always using them, even if that means simply breathing. Our bodies and how we clothe them indicate everything that we are. They reflect our moods, our personalities, our histories, our families, and our cultures. Oftentimes, our bodies and clothes communicate significantly more than our words. This is true for marginalized folks who have historically used the body for reclamation. For centuries, Black and Brown bodies have been exploited as sites of colonization, but also empowered as sites of resistance. Clothing has contributed greatly to creating a sense of “wholeness” on the bodies of the colonized. Wholeness is about gaining a new self-image that is not divided. It is defined simply as the unification of mind, body, and spirit. In this knowledge share dedicated to her grandmother, Sha'Mira shares the ways that our clothing enables wholeness and offers modes by which to cultivate wholeness through our clothing.
