Somatics as Liberation Work

Knowledge Share Description

Somatics, from the Greek root SOMA, meaning the living body in wholeness is an ancient lifeway embedded in animality. How we survive is a bodily process. It's an organic unfolding. Civilization and the project of colonial modernity has sought to dislocate us from this truth to uphold the Cartesian duality of the mind/body split that allows for systemic dominance to take hold. Remembering ourselves as enfleshed beings is a process of reclaiming our embodied truths, re-calling the language of our bodies, and living from them in ways that undo systems of dominance. This knowledge share is an exploration into the body as a site and location of liberation. It is an experiential decoupling from systemic dominance in order to awaken into pockets of freedom. Anchored in a political cultural somatics (Menakem), attuned to somatic trauma resolution (Levine) and anchored in feminist ecological perspectives, this is a place to return home to the body, resource, and practice staying with the trouble of our times.

We will explore:

  • Understand somatics as an ancestral lifeway

  • Attune the patterns of nervous system activation

  • Unpack the links between systemic dominance and embodiment

  • Onboard trauma-attuned nervous system care practices as liberation work
