Telling the Bees: Honeybees as Oracle for Transformation

Knowledge Share Description

"Telling the bees" is an ancient practice said to hold origins in Northern Europe. In Celtic mythology, Honeybees were regarded as messengers between our world and the spirit realm.

For centuries, beekeepers across Europe have kept up this ancient tradition of relating to honeybees as messengers. In this practice, beekeepers consider the bees they work with as extended members of their own family, and keep them informed of changes in their lives: Marriages, new births and especially deaths were marked by decorating the hive and telling the bees what had happened.

Using this interspecies relation as our guide we will learn about the tradition of "telling the bees" and some of its Northern European origins. We'll explore how to adapt this practice to one of listening to our interspecies collaborators. Ang will guide participants in an overview of the honeybee hive so we can collectively discover who is inside. We'll gather for a guided visualization and break out into small groups to discuss what the bees told each of us during our exercise. Collectively we will discuss the honeybee as metaphor and guide, and explore how we can bring these fauna into our own oracle practice to listen more deeply to the world around us.
